The Brief

Ewell Castle Prep School approached us with a vision for two meaningful outdoor spaces:

1. A Scramble Stack Play Area – a natural play structure designed to support physical development, coordination, and
   core strength through adventurous outdoor activity.
2. A Memorial Reading Garden – a tranquil, nature-inspired space to honour a much-loved teacher, offering children and staff a calm place for reading, reflection, and wellbeing.

The Design

Scramble Stack Playground

We handcrafted a bespoke timber scramble stack designed to encourage active, open-ended play, with a strong focus on
natural aesthetics and physical development. This structure was crafted using hardwood Robinia timber, known for its:

• Exceptional strength and durability
• Naturally resistant properties, making it ideal for all-weather outdoor environments
• Sustainable sourcing, aligning with eco-conscious school values
• Warm, organic appearance that blends seamlessly into the natural landscape

The scramble stack supports:

• Balance, movement, and gross motor development
• Safe and challenging outdoor activities
• Long-lasting, low-maintenance play in line with sustainable playground design principles

Memorial Reading Garden

With a focus on quiet reflection and learning in nature, the reading garden was designed to foster literacy, nature, and
connection. We enhanced the space by adding:

• Raised timber planters with pollinator-friendly plants
• Natural seating for group and solo reading moments
• An outdoor library stocked with books to promote literacy in a calming setting
• Retained original features, including the archway and rear shelter
• Eco-conscious layout to support wildlife and biodiversity, creating a true nature-based educational environment
