Precision Timber Project

Dore Primary School – Elevating Physical Development Through Active Play

Client: Dore Primary School, Sheffield
Project Type: Active Play Zone for Reception Pupils
Focus: Gross Motor Skill Development, Balance, and Confidence Building

The Challenge: Designing a Dynamic Play Space for Physical Growth

Dore Primary School approached us with a clear and purposeful brief:
to create a bespoke outdoor play area for their Reception-age children that would actively support gross motor skill development, coordination, and physical confidence.

The challenge was not simply to install a playground that looked appealing, it had to function as a physical development tool, encouraging children to stretch their limits safely, explore movement, and build lifelong motor skills.

The school specifically required:

  • A Trim Trail designed to promote progressive physical challenge.
  • Two Climbing Frames offering different height levels and access points for varying abilities.
  • A layout that would maximise movement flow and space efficiency, while maintaining high safety standards and visual harmony with the school’s existing landscape.

Our Approach: Purposeful Play, Engineered for Progress

At Precision Timber, every design starts with understanding the why.
For Dore Primary, the why was clear – to strengthen physical literacy in early childhood through active, imaginative, and self-directed play.

We created a compact, yet dynamic adventure zone built from sustainable, natural timber, designed to foster continuous movement and challenge. The equipment layout ensures an intuitive flow, allowing children to transition smoothly from one activity to another while developing strength, balance, and agility.

Our Solution

Integrated Trim Trail Features

Each element was selected to provide progressive difficulty and full-body engagement:

  • Stepping Logs – Enhance depth perception, coordination, and lower-body strength.
  • Monkey Bars – Develop core and upper-body strength while improving grip and endurance.
  • Wobbly Rope Bridge – Promote balance and stability through movement-based challenge.
  • Hop-Along Disc Crossing – Encourage rhythm, agility, and quick-footed coordination.
  • Tiered Balance Beam Crossing – Offer a scalable challenge that builds confidence and poise.

Skill-Building Structures

Complementing the trail, we designed two climbing frames with multi-level platforms and diverse access routes, allowing for both independent and group exploration.

  • Traverse Wall – Encourages lateral movement, teamwork, and grip strength development.
  • Climbing Frames – Purpose-built for early years, incorporating age-appropriate handholds and heights to nurture confidence through safe challenge.

The Result: Active Play with Real Educational Impact

The completed installation immediately became one of the most popular and impactful spaces within the school grounds.
Despite the compact footprint, the design delivers exceptional play value, with every feature intentionally contributing to EYFS physical development goals.

Teachers quickly noticed measurable improvements in balance, strength, and teamwork among the children. The space is now used daily as a key part of the school’s outdoor learning provision, integrating movement and fun into the fabric of their early education.

“The trim trail is amazing and the kids are absolutely loving it! It’s helping them with their coordination, strength, balance, agility, teamwork skills — just great!”

Aisling Farrell, EYFS Lead & Year 1 Class Teacher

“We are so, so happy with it. The children absolutely love it! They can access all of it independently. It’s really good for their physical development; we’ve seen lots of them develop their strength since they started. It’s really safe, and it’s really, really professionally built. The whole experience of getting the trim trail was fantastic. The company was so professional – they came in when the children were out of school, were really quick putting it up, and listened to what we wanted. They were just incredibly understanding and professional from start to finish.”

Miss Ashton, Reception Class Teacher

The Impact

This project exemplifies our expertise in delivering active play environments that are finely tuned to the needs of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).

Our designs go beyond play, they are developmental tools engineered to build confidence, physical literacy, and social skills, helping schools maximise both educational and investment value.

From concept to completion, we combine natural materials, craftsmanship, and curriculum understanding to deliver play spaces that engage, challenge, and endure.
