Setting: Brand New Two-Year-Old Provision (EYFS Focus)
The Challenge: The core challenge was to develop a bespoke outdoor play and learning environment that aligned with Thorpe Hesley’s ambition to deliver the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum through meaningful outdoor experiences.
This was a ground-up development requiring a high-quality, sensory-rich, and educationally purposeful space that would support every area of the EYFS framework.
The school’s vision was clear:
From the very first on-site meeting, our team worked closely with Thorpe Hesley’s educators to co-create a vision for the new space – one that was immersive, natural, and educationally rich.
Leveraging the organic strength and sustainability of robinia timber, we designed a landscape-led play environment that celebrates both creativity and curriculum learning. Every detail was guided by the question: How can this space inspire curiosity, confidence, and connection?
Our approach transformed the blank canvas into a series of distinct but interconnected learning zones, each tailored to support key areas of the EYFS curriculum:

The completed playground instantly became a vibrant extension of the classroom, seamlessly connecting learning and play. Designed for year-round use, it offers both durability and aesthetic warmth, ensuring the environment grows with the children it serves.
This project stands as a benchmark for early years outdoor development, embodying what can be achieved through close collaboration, craftsmanship, and child-centred design.
