Birdwell Primary School approached us with a vision to overhaul their EYFS playground, aiming to integrate children’s play equipment that fosters physical, creative, and social development. They wanted to create a purposeful outdoor area with playground design tailored to provide dedicated zones of learning that would inspire and engage young minds. Our design team worked closely with Birdwell Primary to bring their vision to life, dividing the playground into clearly defined zones that cater to different aspects of learning and play.
In this area, the staff at Birdwell wanted a sectioned off environment but keeping within the natural theme. We installed natural, waney edge fencing and a gate. A tree was in the area which they wanted to utilise, so we installed a physical climbing ramp around it so children could climb, run, jump, hop and skip to their hearts content. A large traverse climbing wall was installed with assorted coloured climbing handles. Artificial grass was laid to create a natural look and feel. Artificial grass is a great surface with minimal maintenance required.
The staff at Birdwell wanted clear, distinct areas zoned off but keeping within the natural theme. This sand area was sectioned using sleepers at assorted heights, a small bridge with handrails to enter the area, interactive sand walls with various features to encourage fine and gross motor skills as children pour, dig, sift and scoop and a ‘H’ frame pulley to encourage physical development and finished with a canvas cover. Education has never been so fun!
Who doesn’t love construction and our budding future engineers, joiners, builders?! Within this area, we installed a digging area with pulleys, bespoke pebble wall, skip with canvas cover and assorted loose parts, working wheelbarrow, construction table, timber drill, an essential storage shed to store outdoor resources in and two climbing a-frame planks. We absolutely love this area!
The area already had a road with playground markings, but this was an unloved area with not having purpose. The staff at Birdwell wanted to give this area a spruce up and ignite multiple play opportunities. We inlayed artificial grass and installed speed humps to encourage physical development.
This area was designed for a calm, quiet and tranquil space for the children to retreat to. Featuring a sensory path leading into the area, a pergola with raised planter beds and a sensory bendy mirror. Sensory play has so many benefits to it, from understanding the world around them, develop children’s fine and gross motor skills and language and communication.
Water play is a fantastic open-ended resource for children to pour, splash, scoop and transport, promoting children’s cognitive development, fine and gross motor skills and their language development. We installed a water run for children to enjoy the water trickle down the chutes and a water station with a hand pump. Children can enhance their physical development as they manually pump the water through the Perspex chutes.
We installed our ever-popular storytelling set complete with two story telling throne chairs and grass stools. Designed to capture a children’s imagination, spark creativity, and promote social reading. What’s not to love about these?!
