We were thrilled to work with Badsley Primary School on revitalising their Early Years outdoor provision, turning their tired and rotten pirate ship into an engaging, multi-functional space. The school envisioned distinct zones for learning and play, including areas for sand and water play, roleplay, a quiet reading den, nature planters, and safe surfacing to bring the space to life. We delivered exactly that!
We created a natural riverbed complete with timber sluice gates, promoting problem-solving and physical development. A cascading waterfall provided opportunities for exploring cause-and-effect, while natural boulders added a climbing challenge to enhance gross motor skills. Hardy planters were included to bring in greenery, and a tap allowed teachers to control the water flow when needed. Alongside this, the sand area featured an interactive sand wall with timber chutes for hands-on play, a sand kitchen for encouraging roleplay and language development, and a pulley system to support physical activity and problem-solving.
Children at Badsley, infact anywhere(!) love to dig, so we designed a dedicated digging zone where little ones could explore to their hearts’ content. The area included a construction-themed setup with a skip filled with timber loose parts for imaginative play, roleplay-enhancing construction signs, and a pulley system for transporting materials—perfect for developing gross motor skills.
The project showcased a variety of surfaces tailored to the space’s needs, including shockpad with artificial grass, flexipave, which is ideal for boggy areas due to its porous nature, and stunning crazy paving for aesthetic appeal. Rendered walls completed the look, ensuring the space was safe, functional, and visually engaging.
We handcrafted a bespoke timber reading shed designed to perfectly fit the area. It featured ample storage, forward-facing shelves for easy book selection, and a cosy built-in timber seat, creating the ideal quiet space for children to enjoy reading for pleasure.
Our sister company, Precision Commercial Interiors, provided essential support by installing additional taps, upgrading guttering, and fitting new aco drains to ensure effective drainage across the area.
The feedback from staff and children has been overwhelmingly positive! The outdoor play equipment has transformed their Early Years Outdoor provision space into a vibrant, multi-sensory area that inspires learning, creativity, and joy. Watching the children’s faces light up as they explore their new environment is a testament to the value of this project and fills us with pride.
