Transforming Dobcroft Primary School’s KS1 Area with Bespoke Amphitheatre Seating

Dobcroft Primary School sought a company that could bring their vision for a versatile and inspiring outdoor space to life. After consulting with five other playground companies without success, they reached out to another local school for recommendations. That school had worked with us, Precision Timber, and was thrilled with the results of their KS1 area transformation. Based on their glowing recommendation, Dobcroft Primary School decided to entrust us with their project.

The School’s Vision

Dobcroft Primary wanted an engaging outdoor environment where children could learn and play in innovative ways. Their goals included:

• Musical Play: Creating an area where children could explore sound and rhythm together.
• Investigative Play: Designing spaces that encouraged curiosity and discovery.
• Roleplay Opportunities: Providing imaginative play zones.

  Additionally, the school wanted to make a natural bush area—once overgrown and unsafe—a secure, fun space for the children to enjoy.

Our Approach

We carefully designed the KS1 area to align with their objectives, incorporating the natural environment and meaningful elements. A memorial tree planted for a child became the heart of the design, surrounded by a sensory path to bring the area back to life. The amphitheatre seating was nestled into the existing banking for a natural and functional outdoor classroom. Finally, the flooring seamlessly blended with the current paving slabs, creating a cohesive look throughout the space.

Key Features of the Transformation

To achieve the school’s goals, we used a variety of materials and features:

• Flexi Pave Flooring: A durable, non-slip surface that ensured safety around tree roots while complementing the area’s natural aesthetic.
• Robinia and Waney Edge Timbers: These materials added a rustic charm and blended beautifully with the natural environment, creating a warm and inviting space.
• Sensory Path: Designed to engage motor skills and coordination, the path enhanced the area’s accessibility and added a sensory experience.
• Amphitheatre Seating: Positioned in front of the existing stage, this seating provided an ideal space for outdoor lessons, performances, and group gatherings.
• Planters: Encouraging wildlife and teaching children about nature, the planters added an educational and visual element to the space.

The Results

The transformation exceeded the school’s expectations. The new KS1 area became a hub of activity, where children could safely explore, play, and learn. The sensory path and natural materials created a harmonious environment, while the amphitheatre added functionality for outdoor lessons and performances.
