Transforming the Early Years Play at Sandringham Primary School

Sandringham Primary School, Doncaster reached out to us for a complete transformation of their Early Years playground. Their existing space, though filled with homemade efforts, had sadly become tired, rotten, and unsafe. After hearing glowing recommendations from other schools in their trust, Sandringham asked us to create a bespoke design with key zones of learning and easy access between them.

Our Bespoke Design

We carefully planned separate zones tailored to meet the developmental needs of their EYFS children:

Nature Garden & Growing Area

• A planter archway defined the entrance, creating a magical pathway for the children.
• Planters surrounded the space, encouraging children to grow fruit and vegetables while observing the growth process.

Natural Riverbed Area  

• Boulders and a clambering bridge, perfect for imaginative storytelling like “Billy Goats Gruff.”
• A platform with a hand pump to explore the flow of water.
• A moveable water wall for investigative play.
• A water butt to promote sustainability by harvesting rainwater.
• The area was finished with hardy plants and an open-front reading shed, complete with seating and forward-facing bookshelves for easy access.

Construction Area

• Installed artificial grass to keep it tidy and accessible in all weather.
• Added mark-making products to encourage imaginative play.
• A dedicated signpost marked the zone, boosting visual organisation.

Sandpit Zone

• A covered sandpit protected from unwanted visitors.
• Interactive sand walls developed hand-eye coordination.
• A pulley system allowed children to transport sand, fostering problem-solving skills.
• Shelter provided a comfortable area for play in any weather.

Roleplay & Imaginative Play Area

• A roleplay house adaptable to various topics.
• A stage with a ticket booth brought creative play to life.
• Children’s picnic benches provided a social space.

Tree Seating and Nature Enhancements

• Added planters and seating around the existing tree to enhance its functionality.
• Planted new trees to improve the natural environment.

‘Getting Ready Station’

• A getting-ready station included welly storage, coat racks, and a handwashing station to promote hygiene.
• Universal playground sheds with chalkboards were strategically placed for resource storage.
• A potting station offered space for scientific experiments, complete with bug hotels and seating.

Sensory Pathway

• A winding sensory path connected each learning zone, incorporating directional signage and totem poles to encourage outdoor literacy.

Drainage Issues

Our sister company, Precision Commercial Interiors, tackled the boggy areas by installing ACO drains and ensuring proper connectivity. This drastically improved the playground’s usability, even in wet weather.

Smooth Installation

To minimise disruption, the entire project was completed over the summer holidays, ensuring the playground was ready for the children’s return.
